This will enable the code to work on systems where utf8 is the default, such as Mac OSX.
Documentation is in Markdown with Makefile to generate HTML using pandoc. For convenience, I have pre-built the documentation.

These are just typo fixes for the torchat_py branch, probably not so important for you if you're concentrating on the rewrite but you may like to merge them anyway.
