Standardised `label` attribute?

Inkscape uses a custom inkscape:label element attribute to capture friendly labels that can be set and displayed in the 'layers and objects' panel. I presume other editors do something similar. Would it not be nice to standardise such a label attribute for editors to allow for slightly cleaner/smaller markup?

(I don't think aria-label would be suitable for this, and Inkscape pays no attention to it (currently at least; maybe there's a bug report asking for it, I haven't looked)).

If no label is specified, Inkscape uses the ID property, but this can't support spaces.

How does this attribute differ from <title> child elements, except that there can only be one of it?
