Description
Would it be possible to add a field for ISSN numbers on the book management page when cataloguing a periodical.
Furthermore, it would be nice if one could scrap magazines/periodicals using ISSN numbers.
Would it be possible to expand Pinakes with an option to handle periodicals or multi-volume works, either as individual works or series? See the following guide from Axiell
Multi-volume works
Multi-volume works are monographic resources that are filled out or intended to be filled out with a defined number of parts.
Multi-volume works can be catalogued using two different methods:
The single work method
The series method
You are free to choose between these methods when cataloguing manually. For guidance, take a look at the advantages and disadvantages below.
When importing records from external sources, the cataloguing method for the imported record determines how a multi-volume set is presented in Quria.
The method to be chosen for manual cataloguing is determined by whether or not the parts of the multi-volume set have different titles. A title is considered different only if it contains one or more meaningful words or phrases. Simple numerical or alphabetic characters are not considered a different title.
Example:
Part 1 or Volume 3 are not considered different titles.
When Sweden Became an Empire or Greatness and Decline are considered different titles.
Single work method
If the parts do not have different titles, use the single work method. In this case, create a work containing the entire work title in Quria, and the separate parts form manifestations.
Example: Single work method with non-distinctive title on part
Work title: Collected works of William Falkner
Manifestation name on part: Part 1
Manifestation name on part: Part 2
Note:
This method can also be used even if the parts have different titles – it is up to you as the cataloguer.
Example: Single work method with different titles for parts
Work title: Lord of the Rings
Manifestation name for part: The Fellowship of the Ring
Manifestation name for part: The Two Towers
Manifestation name for part: The Return of the King
Series method
If the parts have different titles, you can also use the series method. Each part is then considered an individual work, and the different parts are linked together by means of a series title.
Example: Series method
Title: The Fellowship of the Ring
Manifestation series information: Lord of the Rings, Part 1
Title: The Two Towers
Manifestation series information: Lord of the Rings, Part 2
Title: The Return of the King
Manifestation series information: Lord of the Rings, Part 3
Advantages and disadvantages of the different methods
Since both methods can be used when cataloguing a title with different part titles, it may be useful to clarify the advantages and disadvantages.
One work method
Advantages: The title details provide a complete overview of all parts and their availability.
Disadvantages: It is not possible to make reservations at the expression level. Since each part is a manifestation in its own right, reservations must be made at the manifestation level.
Series method
Disadvantages: It is not possible to obtain a complete overview of the title details and availability of all parts at the same time, as each part is a separate work.
